Columbus has got to be a hotspot for talented artistry. I can think of at least ten unmatched groups or solo artists off the top of my head that originate in Columbus, Ohio. What’s in the water over there? Maybe I need to plan a visit soon…
Spice Jar consists of Zack Elswick and Alonso Zavala and takes influence from bands like Modern Baseball, Dinosaur Jr, and Title Fight (all incredibly talented and classics in their own right).
This new single, Again, was released earlier this month and is packed with near-perfect vocals, hallowing drums, and relatively simple but memorable guitar melodies. It’s everything a punk-rock/indie/DIY mashup should be.
Starting in 2018, Spice Jar has always written straightforward and authentic lyrics, and to quote them, “would fit right into a basement show setlist with Real Friends, Mom Jeans, or The Front Bottoms”. The chorus of the song is catchy and honest: “It’s okay to not be / Okay sometimes / Broken people can’t fix our minds / Love me, leave me / I’ll be alright”.
Anyone who knows me, knows I am a sucker for any of the three genres (and bands) I listed above. To have them meet together in such a raw and enjoyable way is truly a gift and I can’t wait to dive more into Spice Jars discography as the week goes on.
Again is now streaming on Spotify, Soundcloud, Apple Music, and anywhere else you stream tunes. Give this new single some love and follow them on IG @officialspicejar!
