When I saw the name SLEEP CLUB come up in our submissions channel, I immediately knew I was in for a treat. “Take These Hands, Show Me How To Feel” is the fourth and final release in “Formulative Singles”, a collection intended to pivot Matt Jones’ shoegaze solo project away from indie and dream pop and towards a darker, heavier tone. Despite the shift in vibe, I noticed a familiar warmth and complexity that reminded me of their previous work.
I found a deep sadness and desperation in this song, and was drawn in by the immersive and haunting guitar and bass melodies. The ominous tension starts to hit harder as it builds into the chorus, heavier instrumentation adding a deeper sense of weight and despair. I’d describe it as evocative and intense, with heady, dreamlike lyrics that reminded me of an inner voice pleading to be understood.
I don’t typically listen to a ton of shoegaze, but there’s something about SLEEP CLUB that I really enjoy. I was curious what the shift towards a darker, more brooding sound would look like, and it did not disappoint. With more tracks in the works, I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for future releases.
