With a love of visual art, electronic music, lo-fi pop and questionable punctuation choices, Japanese singer/songwriter Siiieee____ has curated a sound and artistic vision all her own.
The solo project of Kanako Kosukegawa — better known professionally as Cana, vocalist of veteran quintet I-dep and Sotte Bosse — she has been at it as Siiieee____ since 2023.
On this song in particular, her music comes across like a combination of Digital Ash-era Bright Eyes, Kate Bush, Cocteau Twins, bellyache-era Billie Eilish, and The Japanese House.
Lo-fi dreampop blends with a DIY alt-rock feel, and all is covered in an almost-shoegazey shimmer. It feels scenic and cinematic, but not in a blockbuster way. More in a low-budget, Japanese-language, Lost In Translation adaptation way. Charming and full of grace and soul, it’s impossible not to love it, even if you don’t understand what’s being said.
Cana’s airy delivery is enchanting, the dreamlike soundscapes are bewitching, and, to be honest, residence is pretty much futile. You may as well just hand over your heart now.
After a string of singles going back three years, “tuturu…” comes from the debut Siiieee____ full-length EP entitled Yau Yau, which is out now via Broken Palace Records. Take a listen to “tuturu…” below.
