With a laid-back, almost stream-of-consciousness series of non-sequitur lyrics, the new collaboration from indie darlings Sea Glass & Sky Alder feels almost like a hip-hop song covered by indie pop artists. Like Steve Mason having a go at a Cool Kids tune or something.
Anyway, it’s a bassy, vibey tune based around a loose beat and minimal instrumentation. It clearly borrows from the 1990s – the bassline feels rather grungey, like it could’ve come from Nirvana or Pixies. And there’s also a distinct new wave/post-punk vibe (think Joy Division with more space between the instruments). But what’s most interesting about the tune is that it’s, conversely, undeniably imbued with a very modern laissez-faire attitude. Steve Lacy, JW Francis and Mac DeMarco spring to mind when thinking of current contemporaries.
With strong individual followings, these guys could take over the world now that they’re working together. The Sea & Sky album – which has been a 5-year project between two friends who met over late-night studio sessions in Brooklyn pre-pandemic – is out in full, now.
