Those in the St Louis area have had the fortune to see Rum Luck making their rounds playing the local punk shows with some regularity. Fortunately for the rest of us, they’ve hit the studio and their debut single is coming out on February 2nd, in advance of their upcoming EP, due out later in 2024. Rum Luck is a 4 piece punk and ska band that does not feature a keyboard or horns, just double guitars, a bass, drums, and great gang vocals. They tend to lean a little more heavily into the punk sounds, but don’t shy away from upstrokes.
The debut single, “Ghost Town”, feels heavily inspired by early Rancid, both musically and vocally. The upstrokes and pacing and the vocal styling immediately draw the comparisons, but that makes for both an exciting and nostalgic sound. It has all of the phrenetic energy of a 1990s era Rancid song. Lyrically, the track is a tale of urban decay- a venue surrounded by empty boarded up buildings, pawn shops, broken dreams and broken homes. The message relies heavily on imagery, but it paints the picture simply and effectively.
If you are a fan of Rancid and The Interrupters, then you won’t want to miss out on Rum Luck.
