Single: Nymphlord – Call Me Up

Northern California’s Nymphlord (the brainchild of the inimitable Tia Rabinovitz) has a new EP coming soon. It’s called Rough Blue Blanket and is due out next month. Tia states that the EP is a collection of coming-of-age songs and this, the lead track from it, is “a song about lifelong friendship. Fittingly, I made it with my friends at a house in Pasadena! If you listen closely, you’ll hear pedal steel, clarinet, upright bass, a broken analogue radio, and many more acoustic instruments woven into the fabric of this track”.

It’s cute, twee and almost coy sounding but at the same time quite dark, with stabs of heavily distorted guitar piercing the gentle acoustic foundation of the track.

Eventually, we meet Bon Iver-style autotuned vocals and the whole thing descends further down the curious rabbit hole it was previously skipping around.

Nymphlord shares that the music at the moment is influenced by 60s folk, 90s grunge and experimental ambient, and you can definitely hear that here.

Rough Blue Blanket is released on May 23, 2025, via Lauren Records.
