Single: Nicole Saphos Band – Virtually For No One

The Nicole Saphos Band deftly adapts a number of compelling influences and styles for their infectious pop track “Virtually For No One.” In this regard, it is not difficult to hear artists like Fiona Apple, St. Vincent, and Dirty Projectors in the amalgamation of vocal textures and angular instrumentation that animate this song. The jazz background of the band’s lead singer, Nicole Saphos, is on full display, as they demonstrate a convincing command over the melodic vocal lines and conversational cadence that pervade the song.

The band notes that these lyrics are inspired “by the events and controversy surrounding the purchase and near-collapse of noted Philly venue World Cafe Live.” The song repeatedly references “Joe,” whom we can only assume is Joseph Callahan, the controversial CEO at the center of this mess. To that end, the song is a pointed critique of Callahan’s legacy, as Saphos sings, “Who is driving this ship? / Has it slipped out of your hands, Joe / Because this ain’t it, Joe.” The lyrics offer a biting indictment of Callahan’s vision for the venue and his role in what appears to be an ongoing labor dispute involving several employees that were abruptly fired for picketing nearly a year ago.

What at first appears to be a rather straightforward radio friendly tune turns out to be a timely social critique. It is a pop banger with an impressive vocal performance leading the way. You can check out both the song and the self-titled record through the link below.
