Single: Minuit Phosphène – Triangle de feu

Timelessness not just as a sound or a “vibe” but as a complete set of things to look forward to, all through a throwback sound.

Minuit Phosphène treats us to another fabulous French-language single. The Saguenay-based band gives us the fun and short track bearing the name of a “triangle of fire”. While I couldn’t find any narrative meaning for a triangle of fire when researching online, I started remembering it as a chemical warning for combustion. The song isn’t necessarily fast, but it does beg urgency from the listener, sort of to live life now with them, to join the ride. “Triangle de feu” certainly has a more whimsical image than the lab-dwelling warning sign it’s based on, and seems to invite us to abandon too many restrictions in favor of a freer life

The entire track to me has these tingles evocative of how humans looked at space in the not-so-near past, the sonic interpretation of stars, the almost avant-garde space age. The cover art drives this concept home, with homely hand-drawn stars over a gradient background. It screams the 2000s.

A very danceable solo drives right into a more yelled outro: one voice tells you “Rechauffe!” (warm up/heat up), and another yells “corps!” (bodies). It’s a very classic call to action, to dance, to live, and embodies the timelessness not just as a sound or a “vibe” but as a complete set of things to look forward to, all through a throwback sound. It’s a search for a better life, and a plea to get on the train now.
