Single: meg elsier – sportscar [scrapped]

Indie rock star is back with a lead single, sportscar [scrapped], that is taken from the deluxe edition of the debut album spittake that we even covered on our blog and enjoyed. The press releases shared two quotes from the artist, so I will share them in full, which will explain why the song did not appear on the debut album. I will also share a brief description of the song’s theme.

“‘sportscar’ is an exciting addition to the deluxe, specifically because ‘spittake’ almost had a completely different identity. There was a time when I was playing with the idea of naming the album Check Engine Light On. The influence of cars and how they move you through life is something I didn’t realize was so important to ‘spittake’ until after I’d written it.”

I was really identifying with my beat-up car my mother gave me. It was this thing handed to me that I treated like shit… But that kinda was my life at the time. Something that was shiny and fast, a veneer; but if you checked under the hood, it was burning out. The oil was dark, and the engine was smoking. I would dye my hair (new paint job), get dolled up (took her to the car wash), and perform so well socially when I went out (that V8 engine purring, baby), but that was all it was. I had a coming-to moment like, ‘This isn’t sustainable and I’m about to crash out.'”

The press release described the song as “a sleek, emotionally charged indie-pop track with alt-rock undercurrents,” which “fuses crisp guitar textures, shimmering synths, and a driving rhythm.”

Emotional, personal, and powerful —these are all qualities that all good indie pop should have, and I am not surprised that the artist is receiving recognition across various music outlets. The fact that a track as great as this one did not make it to the debut album proves the talent he possesses, and I think we should all be paying attention. Perhaps she has a bright future ahead, like other indie heroines such as Mitski and Japanese Breakfast.

Her upcoming deluxe edition of spittake broadens the universe of her praised 2024 debut, featuring 17 tracks that include unrefined live recordings, never-before-heard demos, and personal B-sides that reveal insights into her emotional and creative journey. A limited edition vinyl will also be released—open for pre-order now.
