At just one second shy of three minutes long, the new tune from Los Angeles psych pop/rock duo Livingmore – the long-standing artistic combination of solo musicians Alex Moore and Spencer Livingston – is here for a good time, not a long time.
Psychic Dream is a fuzzy, frenetic fever dream of a song, full of pace, fury, and fun. It’s energetic but also feels kind of sludgy and lethargic – which, on paper, sounds like it shouldn’t work. But work it does. Imagine My Bloody Valentine and The Brian Jonestown Massacre collaborating on an LCD Soundsystem cover version, and you’re in the right ballpark.
Scuzzy as fuck, but extremely danceable – this is a cacophonous party that everyone’s invited to. Driving incessantly from beginning to end, it recalls the work of Primal Scream, Kasabian, or maybe even Oasis at their most psychedelic. Or, probably, more accurately – Noel Gallagher’s collaborations with The Chemical Brothers.
There’s a brief moment of respite about halfway through after a 1960s-sounding mini guitar solo, where things settle down for a minute – but that doesn’t last long. Very quickly, we blast off again, and we are returned to the stratosphere.
