Now more than ever, we live in a world of video games. And Little Oso’s “Simulation Games” is a track that puts you on the two extreme ends of the longing that comes with being a participant in this world.
As the singer sings about being isolated and locked away from the world playing simulation games, we know that they are yearning for a place they have never been before. But what we don’t know is if that place is far away from this digital world, which is a figment of their imagination, or if it is right inside that very world. Are they daydreaming about escaping from it or to it? This ambiguity about the nature of their longing made the escapism in the song dynamic and relatable to me.
The sound of the song fits amazingly well with its contents – the chimes and blips of the computer world and the fuzzy guitars make the song sound like a simulation itself. The little percussion sounds in the beginning and the end sound like switching your console on and then off. And the vocal delivery, with its pauses and a little robotic quality, especially in the chorus, adds to this feeling.
With “Simulation Games”, Little Oso has created a track that feels like a little trip to a pixel world.
