Levi Taschuk released “Closed I’s” on August 7th, the third and final single ahead of his debut full-length album “Dyna Dyvest,” releasing September 4th. Co-produced by Taschuk and Connor Mead, with Taschuk on guitar and Mead on drums, his single is a great indication of what is to come for the album. Having previously covered his single “Vanishing Act,” returning to write about Taschuk feels like a great continuation, and “Closed I’s only deepens what I know about his artistry.
The lyricism on “Closed I’s” is special. Taschuk has a way of asking questions that carries a weight that many articles struggle to do, especially with repetition, “have you ever tried to sharpen a student and just made them even d-uller,” and “have you ever wanted to close your eyes but just not been able to” are lines that linger with me after the song ends. There is an honesty to his lyrics that doesn’t feel forced; many artists struggle to make deep lyrics, and it ends up with them describing words as opposed to hearing the song and knowing the artist felt those feelings.
But to me, Taschuk’s voice stopped me just like it did last time; the way he pronounces and lingers each I on the track is beautiful. Every repetition carries yearning, and you can hear it in his voice, and it’s just so effortless and haunting. There is a want and ache in his delivery that feels completely unguarded, a true talent that I admire in him. The instrumentals match the emotional delivery that creates something similar to Radiohead’s In Rainbows but entirely his own.
“Closed I’s” is a captivating single, and Levi Taschuk is an artist with a verve you can connect with immediately. Dyna Dyvest is out September 4th. :)))
