Bouncier than jelly on a trampoline, ‘Hey Mr.’ is a brilliant slice of indie-pop.
Australian band Layer Cake approach things with a boundless energy and a sense of fun that is so infectious, they should bottle it. Their sound is like a bald Koala – smooth and warm. Their new single ‘Hey Mr.’ sweeps you along and charms you into submission.
I loved the bright, repeating guitar pattern at the start – the slightly odd vocal sound and the fast, shuffling beat made me wonder where this was going to go.
This band has a real talent for memorable hooks. The vocal melody struck me straight away – it starts upbeat, rises to gleeful, then levels up to positively jaunty. It’s enough to floor anybody, and is a cool contrast to the heartfelt lyrics that contain glimpses of darkness.
Hey Mr – why do you shower yourself in blame?
Oh, where do you hide, where do you hide all this pain?
The groove is strong with this one, and there were moments where I had to hold onto my seat for fear of leaping up.
The harmonies are subtle, but as with everything this band does, they are executed with laser-like precision.
The band sounds like they’re having a blast, and the song wizzes past like a cheetah on a skateboard. As their name suggests, the elements are perfectly placed to create a tightly constructed, well-balanced sound.
‘Hey Mr.’ has one irresistible moment after another – and just when you think it can’t get any better, they raise the bar again. A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, and this track is guaranteed to make you think whilst putting a smile on your face and a tap in your toe.
Be prepared for complaints from the neighbours, as you’ll be playing this on repeat!
