Single: Kulfigirls – Red Light

You have come across, surely, plenty of pop-punk/emo songs about yearning for that passionate love, especially on Valentine’s Day. But I bet you a handful of dollars and a box of chocolates that you haven’t heard one with a well-placed sitar, tho.

When Abi sings, “kiss me when the light turns red” the track actually accelerates like the flooring of the gas pedals. Just as well. It isn’t about forbidden love. It’s about love that dreams about turning from platonic to passionate. “How do I breathe…when I’m not next to you?” in this space becomes less a common declaration and more a fiery one borne from dreams of what not only could be, but ought to be in the face of adversity. On Valentine’s Day, red may be the color of romance, but could it also be the color of rebellion?
