Single: JW Francis – Watery Road

“Watery Road” is a spark of child-like wonder—a song that feels at one with the river on which it was conceived.

Since the release of his 2024 LP SUNSHINE, lo-fi nomad JW Francis has kept quite busy. He played a rousing set on Audiotree Live and released a handful of well-received singles in collaboration with both Paul Cherry and Husbands. He even appeared in an episode of The Dirtbag Diaries podcast. It’s the kind of year that any musician would call a victory lap. Still, in the midst of these routine industry milestones for a rising star of the indie circuit, he also found time to traverse the entirety of the Mississippi River in a canoe.

Now, he’s returned from that expedition with a gift salvaged from the current: A love letter to the river entitled “Watery Road.” This track pulses with unbridled earthy joy, and showcases a flowing soundscape of Americana that alloys Alex G’s warped bedroom intimacy with Bob Dylan’s rambling mythology, all filtered through the hazy pop genius of Robert Schneider.

“Watery Road” is a spark of child-like wonder—a song that feels at one with the river on which it was conceived. It glows with the deep technicolor hues of a Delta sunset, and shimmers with the silky texture of river silt. The guitars splash against a vast, percussive groove, imparting a buoyant, restless energy that has become Francis’s trademark. The production retains stubbles of lo-fi dirt and a sheen of sweat without sacrificing articulacy, resulting in a precision-crafted homespun warmth. Francis’s voice drawls with a locale far from his New York home base, as it duets with the harmonica in a catchy, upbeat melodic interplay.

“Watery Road” captures a rare feeling in the modern era: The sense of presence felt when you discover the place you’re supposed to be. It’s the tale of a wanderer whose search for home and identity yields a wealth of both in the beauty of the river, and the community found along the banks.
