Jumpball is a collaborative musical project featuring Nashville-based Robbie Jackson and various guest vocalists. For their new single, Abby Clark (from the band Sister Kit) wrote about her childhood obsession with a well-known computer game, and the comfort it brought her young self.
From the very first bars, ‘Crazy Taxi’ is like walking into a hall of mirrors. Everything is slightly wonky with strange tunings and dissonant wails.
There is a really strong groove and a dense, layered sound. Multiple hooks and an ever-evolving melody lead us by the hand from one section to the next.
Soaked in FX and reverb, this is a dreamy shoegaze world seen through a slightly unsettling filter.
When the chorus finally arrives, the built-up tension is released with a delicate, haunting vocal line.
The character in Abby’s vocal comes through in spite of the ethereal cloak of reverb & fx, with a lower, full tone that suits the track perfectly.
As the tempo drops in the last third, it feels like the taxi is slowly drifting to a halt.
Crazy Taxi certainly has an unusual subject matter, but it carries a serious message, and musically, there is a gravitas that gives the track depth.
