‘WAITING GAME’ is certainly one of the more unique singles I have come across this summer. I have to admit, I chose to write about this single simply for it’s artwork. It’s distorted, VHS vibe drew me, and I am a sucker for a spooky, nostalgic aesthetic. However, it would definitely be understatement to say I didn’t expect what laid behind it’s cover.
Haunted Disco is the musical project of Arkansas’, Claire Gray Moon, with sounds that land anywhere between instrumental lo-fi soundscapes, to avant-garde beat experiments: it’s a refreshing place in DIY music, where artists can sometimes play it safe. ‘WAITING GAME’ plays it anything but safe. It’s an ear splitting, rip roaringly distorted ballad (in a sense). It’s a hell of a lot of fun, bearing resemblance to English singer-songwriter, Scout Niblett. Before completely descending into utter carnage, a chaotic drum line is collaged in, somehow drawing it all together in perfect harmony.
‘WAITING GAME’ is definitely a song that gets under your skin. The chaos of it all is completely addictive, but it just shows how impressive Haunted Disco’s range of musical influences is. There are a thousands things you could compare the song to, and yet none really match what is being done here. ‘WAITING GAME’, finds catharsis in the noise, and I am sure there is more where this comes from when Haunted Disco’s new album, IF I LIVED IN IGNORANCE, comes out September 6th.
