For those of you who are familiar with the incredible soulful big band, blues, and rock & roll sounds of Harry Katz and the Pistachios and their trademark deep raspy vocals, you are in for a treat. This ten-piece epic band has produced something that is beyond your expectations (if that’s possible). For those of you new to the band, a comparison to Postmodern Jukebox seems fair. And for those unfamiliar with that kind of sound but interested in what that means, it’s time to strap down, put in your headphones, and get ready for something special.
For the first time, Harry Katz and the Pistachios are expanding their repertoire into ska. “80 Proof” is the first of four songs on an upcoming two-tone ska themed EP. This may be the band’s first foray into ska, but the talented musicians pull it off masterfully.
The song is smooth with a nice soft rhythm, smooth horns, a steady two-tone beat underneath. While the keys are often laying the offbeat rhythms, they also get to show off with a pleasant solo in the middle, while the guitar maintains the offbeat ska progression. But the guitars also have the opportunity to shine with little changes under the vocals. And the vocals…! If you love Harry Katz’s signature raspy vocals, you might be missing out, but you’re not losing out: Linn Holmes and McKail Seely deliver beautifully harmonized vocals in an amazing performance.
The song has themes of drinking, alcoholism, mistakes, growth, and moving on. Lyrically, it’s an excellent song. Great story writing, lyrics that mirror other lyrics but take on new meanings. The execution is so flawless that it’s hard to focus on the meaning. You just want to get on your feet and move your hips. If this song doesn’t get you excited for the rest of the EP, then nothing will. Take a listen to “80 Proof” below.
