First thoughts – wow, what a vocal. Raphaëlle Sauer’s syrupy, sultry, and sometimes supermassive voice fluctuates over the course of the track, between understated and larger than life. She comes across like a more powerful Stacy King or bizarrely, the antithesis – but at the same time blood relative of – Hope Sandoval.
The instrumentation in the early part of the song is as delicate as the flutter of the wings of a butterfly. It’s like audio ether, at first. Subduing and arresting. As the song progresses it develops. Transforms. Shapeshifts. In increments.
It seems to go up in gears. It graduates from the softness of the beginning and blooms into what is essentially a slow hard rock song. This metamorphosizes into – given the double bass drum, paired with the crunching guitars and the now soaring vocals – almost operatic metal.
It’s undeniably epic. Excellently crafted, emotive, and ethereal.
