Single: French Cuffs – Give Up

So, suddenly, the conversation about what happened to rock has turned… obnoxious. For the sake of many people’s mental health, I’ll save the details about how suddenly rock music was swapped out for rap music by the “CIA” or something. Some conspiracy theories are just not worth engaging with. The truth remains: The reason why rock hasn’t been doing well (despite some really popping scenes in the underground) is that rock music has just not been grabbing the kids lately. (If that is true, how do bands such as The Paradox or Sleep Token get #1 records?)

The hallmark of rock music has always been the ability to use the buzz of the guitar string, the powerful strike of the drums, and the rumbling low of the bass to extract something powerful, if not fun from those who listen. Something vital, explosive, something fun, something deep inside that needs to erupt. Punk, indie, grunge, metal: You name it. Rock is supposed to hit more than it is supposed to produce hits. The reason why hyper pop blew up is because of that buzzing, pixie-sticks energy that whirs within the music (as well as constant re-inventions of both the sound and the genre). The reason why hip hop blew up is because of its ability to making rapping and music sound both fun and like a great escape from reality. If rock suffers at all, it is because it isn’t providing anything for the kids to hold onto.

This is where Denver’s own French Cuffs come in. “Give Up”, the third single from their debut album Half-Nice, sounds like pop-punk with a slight hint of indie rock flavoring. The music wastes no time getting into the music, and when it hits, it hits like some of the tangiest candies you have ever tasted in your youth. All there is to say is that when this band comes to your town, you shouldn’t hesitate to go see them. You might see a couple of sweaty, moshing kids there.
