Damn! Denver, Colorado is bringing the ska! Doc Turbo just dropped a single called “Lookin’ Like a Hot Time” that launches power pop energy into a ska punk song and rocks so damn hard. It feels like Mest and Good Charlotte meet Mustard Plug and the Bosstones in the best fusion possible. The energy of this song is off the charts, and I love it.
The intro to the song is almost reminiscent of “Jesus of Suburbia” if it was cleaner and upbeat. The “boys are back in town” lyrics sound like an ’80s rock song, but the horns building under the guitars add an intensity that was lacking in most power pop bands and rock bands, creating excellent rising action. The drums punch and carry the pace, and the guitars deliver the pop.
But then the second verse comes in, and the bass is carrying the ska rhythms as the vocals maintain the power pop vibes. The lyrics start dropping ska references like the Specials and Madness while talking about never forgetting where you came from. Honestly, the whole song is two and a half minutes of demanding you get on your feet and hit the dance floor.
As far as I can tell, this is the only song Doc Turbo has released. They have one song on streaming and on their new Instagram page, but all the posts refer to it as their new song, not their debut song.
