Single: dipper – Forwards, Sideways, and Back

Contrary to popular belief the slow takeover of the country genre is very welcome. Artists such as Megan Maroney and Ella’s Langley have apparently been killing the charts lately. I only wish that with the boost of mainstream country, either comes an equal boost of more alternative country or the kind of country that feels… less manufactured? Less formulaic, I guess? Whatever be your description, it wouldn’t hurt if dipper had a chance to take something with his ballad.

It may be me, but sometimes you just want a simple, raw country song to feel like a chill afternoon. Whether you call what dipper does “cosmic country” or “indie country”, it is the type that encourages you to just look at the bare world around you while the sound of metal strings gets grazed to the haze of a steel guitar.

“Apr. 24” is a warm love song that isn’t afraid to inspire a little chuckle to anyone it is written for. “I will love you forwards, love you sideways and back” is a smile-inducing sentiment that only gets sweeter with the promising lines “if you’re going upwards, I’ll clean up my act”. (But in the meantime, he is also not above pulling off a robbery for a bit of funding.) It’s raw lo-fi country that may sound born from a life that could stand to be much better than it is, but knows that there is always togetherness that holds things together.
