Single: Demora – torpor

Torpor is an energetically charged, tipsy shoegaze track from one of the Bay Area’s best new bands, Demora.

Chaotic but catchy guitar licks reminiscent of early Knifeplay EPs run throughout the track, holding more of a place in the melody than the reverb soaked vocals, as is proper for the genre. Halfway through the track a light, shaker laden part of the song lifts the energy before crashing down at the end in a swell of distortion, a wall of perfectly mixed sound. Juxtaposed with straight ahead shoegaze segments, the track also explores more aggressive, percussion fronted choruses that add greatly to the overall sense of the band’s impressive musicianship.

Coming out of an explosive, DIY-heavy scene, Demora stands among many other great artists on the label Cherub Dream Records.

Demora’s main songwriter had this to say about the track:

“In a suite of distorted guitars and swirling vocals, Torpor describes the paralyzing nature of depression and being trapped in one’s own body.”

This feeling of entrapment within one’s own body is reflected in the muffled vocal layers, giving a sense of the singer’s continued attempt to communicate with others, to step outside of their mental state.
