If there’s one thing we love at Start-Track, it’s artists who bucked big labels and still put out bangers. That’s the story of DACY – the Melbourne-based brother-sister duo of Jack and Ruby Dacy – and their new single “tell me i’m wrong”.
The track is the duo’s first after their return to independent status, having released their debut self-titled EP on EMI Music Australia in 2023. But like Radiohead before them, DACY and EMI split ways, leaving Ruby and Jack to release “tell me i’m wrong” on indie label Yes Records.
But the lack of a big-time label doesn’t mean the loss of big-time sound. “tell me i’m wrong” – from its first shimmering guitar notes – contains all the indie pop might DACY can muster, showcasing their songwriting abilities in both lyrics and music. Ruby’s soulful voice shines, giving Phoebe Bridgers vibes, especially when paired up with Jack’s simply strummed but powerful guitar.
Ruby’s voice is perfect to deliver the lyrics, which are (in her words) about “that one person you can’t stop thinking about… You know acting on it could mess things up, but every time you see them, the feelings come rushing back. The chorus is that moment you finally say enough is enough, take the jump, and ask them how they feel about you.”
It’s a gripping song through and through, and though Ruby and Jack recorded this at a studio in their parents’ house, it sounds every bit as professional as a big-label release. Your loss, EMI Australia! Here’s to more wonderful music from DACY in their back-to-indie era. Take a listen to “tell me i’m wrong” below.
