I’d like you to imagine waking up an hour early before work with the coffee pot on and the aroma filling the air. The sun peeking through the creases of the blinds, like little splinters of light, letting you know the world is waking up. You grab your phone and open up the Bandcamp app to the soft, slowcore vibes of “skindeep” by d. inver (Route 500). The song’s intro plays and blends perfectly into that first sip of coffee. The melancholic atmosphere of the first few lines echo in your head, “The day won’t wash away, It’s in the walls, Under the duvet, Hope won’t smoke me out, I’m in the black clouds, I’m different now.” Your morning continues as the track plays, the dreamy tones carrying you through your routine as if you’re swept up on a pile of clouds. The chorus sings a tribute to the day ahead: “We coming apart from here on out.”
Such a simple phrase with immense depth. Locking eyes with yourself in the mirror while brushing your teeth, the words repeat once more, and your lips sync, “We’re coming apart from here on out.” Isn’t that the truth? Despite our attempts to look our best, do our makeup, style our hair, etc., it can all feel so repetitive and futile. From the moment of completion, we are “coming apart” slowly but surely. Our hair gets messy again, our clothes get dirty, and we have to start it over again tomorrow. Yet as you listen to “skindeep” for all its sadness and drear, you can’t help but feel a glimmer of hope. Much like the light sneaking its way through the cracks in the blinds, d. inver has found a way to illuminate your spirits. Showing us were not alone in these feelings of despair. As the song plays out with its catchy guitar and drums, you find yourself listening again and again! “skindeep” quickly becomes the theme of your morning routine as you tie your shoelaces, dawn your work clothes, and head out the door.
