A Norwegian band influenced by ’80s Americana and ’90s alt-rock? I’ve never been more down to cover a single, maybe ever. I may or may not have an obsession with Norway’s architecture, language, and art (and a dying wish to visit). This latest track is a true gem, so let’s get into the nitty-gritty.
Cold Shoulders was formed in 2022, with members including Espen Solberg, Magnus Bøckmann, and Christian Waale Hansen. In 2025, Fredrik Gretland joined, making it a well-rounded quartet. This single “Break the waves” is filled to the brim with inspired ’80s sounds and vibes. I’m a hardcore lover of ’80s Americana and noticed the bits of similarities almost immediately upon hitting Play. I was reminded of The Gaslight Anthem and The Lemonheads, but it’s hard to put a pin in Cold Shoulders because they do so much more than these simplified “boxes” could ever communicate.
Break the waves has uplifting instrumentals, honest and thoughtful lyrics, and true soul that makes me want to drive my convertible (that I don’t have) with the top down to the nearest sea cliff overlook, sit on the hood, and stare glossy-eyed at the pink sky until sunset.
This song has mentions of “tomorrow” and points to the future as its salvation, optimistic with a dash or two of naivety. It’s classic subject matter with Cold Shoulders’ unique-sounding spin and interpretation to make it their own. The single art for this is exactly what it should be: an open sky with wispy clouds, and a seagull coasting along the wind, heading toward that better tomorrow.
I can’t express how lucky I feel to live so close to the Florida coast, simply because “Break the waves” is one of the most perfect beach songs. However, you don’t need a beach or a body of water close by to enjoy this to its fullest extent. Stream “Break the waves” now on your preferred platform and show Cold Shoulders some love on socials. As for me, I’m looking forward to that better tomorrow with this song on repeat.
