First Time in DENVEEEEERRRRRRRRR! Holy shit, when lead singer Brittany Luna golds that note in the intro and there is absolutely no doubt that Catbite’s first new music in three years is going to knock your fucking socks off, and the rest of the song absolutely holds up to that intro. I’ve listened to the song over a hundred times now, and that first bar kicks my ass so damn hard every single time.
Last week a huge summer tour was announced with blockbuster ska bands Less Than Jake, the Suicide Machines, and Fishbone all as headlining bands. The east coast dates would have California’s Bite Me Bambi as the opener- an absolutely phenomenal newer band who just put out an incredible 8 track album in February, and the West Coast dates would feature Philadelphia’s Catbite, who just announced this 6 track EP for release in May. While Catbite and Bite Me Bambi might be the newest bands on the tour, neither one is really new. In fact, Catbite might be one of the most successful modern ska bands around, touring internationally, and absolutely driving the ska scene while reminding everyone that ska is not outdated and that you don’t need to be an 8-piece band or full of puns to make ska that absolutely fucks.
After that first verse, you are ready for something epic, and you are immediately hit with the power pop guitar and you are prepared for something special, and goddammit does every single instrument get the chance to deliver on that. The bass line leading under the verse sets the atmosphere to bring Luna’s vocals to the forefront and build tension, the drum fill under the bridge to slow down the tempo and then it back up for Kayleigh’s synth solo is phenomenal, and holy shit what a synth solo. This song was a 10/10 before the solo but where did this come from! It literally steals the entire song. KMoy sold her entire soul into writing a solo that would top the intro to the song, and the result is my ears being blessed to hear this song any time I want.
I have no idea what these other 5 songs are going to be, but I know I’ll be listening to them on repeat. If you were planning on going to see one of Fishbone, Suicide Machines, or Less Than Jake, the stars of the show are probably playing first, so show up early.
