In this curious and charming cover version of Jane Lancaster’s 1983 cult acapella tune – It’s A Fine Day – self-described “South Ontario sad girl” CAGEDANCR. (real name Chloe Joseph) expands exponentially on the original.
She is far from the first artist to have decided to do so (see well-known examples by A Guy Called Gerald and Opus III) but on this occasion CAGEDANCR. (joined here by a vocalist credited simply as “Nat”) does so by adding jangly lo-fi bedroom indie guitars, a basic but song-serving backbeat and catchy lead lines.
The song was originally written as a poem, set against the backdrop of the perennially grey streets of Manchester, England. It was based around the idea of widows longing for their spouses that didn’t return from war, and fantasising about how that now non-existent time would’ve been spent.
This sentiment has been beautifully repackaged into a sweet – almost twee – indie track to convey the simple but important message to “keep your loved ones close”. And just in time for Valentine’s Day no less.
