Currently based in the City of Roses (Portland, OR), Brood22 brings a lo-fi slacker-slowcore energy into their sound. Similar to the likes of early Modest Mouse (This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About) or Duster (Stratosphere), but with more modern sounds like Teethe, Helvetia, etc.
Their song ‘Funnel Web’ explores lyrical ideas such as repetitive boredom and becoming a recluse:
“leave me be – falling down – funnel web – caught in your spiral shell – wrap me – bleed me empty – and leave my shell”
This atmosphere is complimented by the production. It sounds as if it was recorded live in a garage or in a room that shapes the sound to be so natural and glued together. Everything feels like it’s teetering on the edge — washed out, wobbly, but intentional. A soft-yet-crunchy sound that fuzzes out to keep it in the mid-2000s indie rock world.
What’s impressive is that it feels as if this performance is happening right in the room I am listening in.
