Right off the rip, this song caught my attention. First, the name of the song being, Is That Weed Wrapped In A Wendy’s Napkin?, is golden. Second, the cute little turtle fella on the cover art (shoutout to the Beach Boys) is a vibe as someone who sees versions of these guys all the time in Florida. Third, the song is super fun, catchy, and matches the overall energy and personality of the project perfectly.
This track has been out since late February of this year, and interestingly, the song title is based on a real conversation and interaction Bobby had with a guitarist while he was on tour. This track leans more alternative and indie in its nature, but Bobby Edge isn’t sticking himself in a genre box (thank God). He’s explored everything from chiptune, folk, surf, R&B, hardcore, doo-wop, bossa nova, ska, and more. I feel very drawn to this artist on a personal level, and will be checking out all of his creations here shortly, because that ability to shapeshift is IMPRESSIVE.
We’re introduced to a sound in this track in the beginning that feels somewhat like an early 2000s alternative song; a shiny electric guitar melody sends us into a thumping drumbeat, but then transitions into this melting of indie and punk. There’s a guitar solo in this song that absolutely RIPS and has sort of lit a fire under my butt to continue learning guitar, as silly as that may sound.
Is That Weed Wrapped In A Wendy’s Napkin? has bright-sounding instrumentals, beaming vocals, and lyrics that paint a picture of existential crisis and a yearning to escape:
“I can’t believe my life is halfway over
I thought by now I’d be much wiser
Got to admit I don’t know shit
I just wanna get some drunk yakitori
I’ll be drinking away half of my stories
I know that you know just what I mean”
There’s a desperation for escape, a disappointment that at this age we don’t really have anything figured out, and the realization that most, if not all, people live with this feeling. We have this idea as children that adults have it all together, which leads us to believe that once we hit a certain age, we’ll be gifted this ambiguous “knowing” that gives us security and stability. Unfortunately, we reach adulthood and are forced to face the fact that most people are winging it, and the only thing that’s certain is that we’ll never be fully secure or comfortable as human beings living in this world. And we can find security in that fact (LOL).
This line in the song had me laughing and then craving teriyaki chicken, so read at your own risk:
“I just wanna fuckin’ take ya to a place where they serve chicken on a stick”
Feeling like getting takeout? Me too.
This track is part of an album called “Dirt Handsome Vol. 1”, and the entire project is phenomenal. If you’re an enjoyer of alternative music in any form, give this a listen and keep up with Bobby Edge on socials! Feel free to support him on Bandcamp as well and pick up a cassette or other merch before he inevitably blows up.
