In May, Maryland based ska band premiered their debut single, “Maybe She”. Two months later, on the 5th of July, they released their second single- and I think we better get used to it. Apparently they have more songs that they are working on and they plan on continuing to release more music, and that’s a win for everybody.
Batsnack features just four members with a single guitar, drum, bass, and a saxophone. “Heart Beat”- the second single, features an uptempo drum beat and upbeat drums, while the saxophone, through most of the song, is a little more slow, soulful, and laid back. There are a few tempo shifts in the song in each direction, where the drums slow down for the front half of a verse, or where the sax picks up the mood to match the guitar and drums for the second half of a verse or for an instrumental portion. The song transitions smoothly from a slow, emotional vibe while describing feelings of love and longing to a nice upbeat ska jam that makes you want to pick it up.
Lyrically, both songs so far have been love songs. In this one the narrator describes falling in love, being overwhelmed, and hoping the feeling is reciprocated. For me, the selling point of this track is definitely the song construction more than the lyrics. The bass stands out several times and grabs my attention. The three drum beats lining up with “my heart beats” in the chorus, the jammy sessions of the sax in the instrumental portion are all highlights of the song. This is definitely a band I need to keep on the lookout for to see where the music goes from here. Definitely a band worth keeping an eye on.
