Single: Astralace – Skin

Skin by Houston, Texas, indie pop group Astralace begins and feels almost like a song that would’ve been at home on the Donnie Darko soundtrack. However, the 1980s new wave/synth-pop instrumentation is quickly joined by the dulcet tones of singer Ashley Lacy, and the mood shifts considerably.

Her folky tones immediately introduce an analogue warmth that felt like it wasn’t there before. Except that it was – in the form of the soothing, subtle organ sounds in the background – we just didn’t really notice it. Ashley’s presence brings it sharply into focus.

By the time the pre-chorus kicks in, the song has organically grown into a bonafide behemoth. In its sing-a-long simplicity, the chorus itself is perfect audience participation fodder for rooms full of adoring people having a good time.
