January second was the day of a monumentous release – All Systems Go, a New Jersey-based band, released a single from their upcoming EP, Finding Closure, which releases February nineteenth. The single, full of heavy guitar and lyricism that packs a punch, is titled “Everything Going Well is a Bad Thing, Right?”, and revolves around the experience of and feelings around a relationship ending abruptly and/or unexpectedly.
The single opens with chunky rhythm guitar and a catchy lyrical melody that then drives us into a captivating guitar riff and intro sequence, the melodies, rhythms, chords, and lyrics reminding me of late 2000s to mid 2010s emo and punk songs, satiating my ever-present need to conquer my nostalgia. Before we jump into the main/second chorus, there’s a line that I love that goes “you say I got rose-colored vision, when this could all go wrong, but you can look at the bright sides without staring at the sun” – this line has a captivating quality, also reminiscent of punk and emo music from earlier years while also still being fresh and new. All Systems Go have a profound talent for creating music that overall has this dreamy mix of nostalgia and something completely new.
If this single says anything about their upcoming EP, then I’ve got every calendar marked and a million reminders set in my phone. I’m eager to see what this EP sounds like in its entirety and to experience that dreamy mix of past and present, fully captivated and drawn-in by their music. I know for a fact I’ll spend the next week or so replaying this track in my mind, and maybe it’s an earworm that I’ll never get rid of.
