Single: Ale Maya – Such Dullness

Some singers have distinctive, trademark voices. Bob Dylan. Axl Rose. Bobby Womack. John Lyndon. Regina Spektor. And we think Ale Maya should be added to that list. The best way we can explain what she sounds like is to ask you to imagine what an amalgamation of Dionne Warwick, Shingai Shoniwa, Paloma Faith and Nina Walsh might sound like. That’s what she sounds like.

She incorporates luscious keys, classic drum machine sounds (which, whilst electronic, seem almost to take on a bit of a Jesus & Mary Chain vibe), expertly layered vocals, Joy Division-style bass and various types of guitars and the resulting song has an almost gothic-krautrock/pop energy to it. Like The Cure collaborating with Neu!, it hits you instantly, deep in your jet-black, kohl-lined soul.

Hailing from Paraguay, but now residing in Taiwan, she is seemingly rather active on the Taipei City music scene; catch her live if you can! Her debut album is due out next year.
