High Tide has an eerie, almost medieval feeling undercurrent running throughout it, and feels at the same time quietly sinister and openly vulnerable.
It begins, although only momentarily, with the sound of crashing waves. The scene is set, and it feels rather English, like a musical accompaniment to an ancient Pagan ritual taking place on a pebble beach somewhere. It also feels like the sort of song that may have inspired the work of Laura Marling or Lisa Hannigan.
Yet Abi hails from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Actually, listening more intently, we’re also getting a touch of anti-folk heroine Kimya Dawson here, albeit much more measured and refined, particularly in the second verse. The production (also taken care of by Abi) is minimal, and the spartan acoustic backing allows her ethereal vocals the space they need to shine.
This is Abi’s first new music released under her own name since 2022. Hopefully, it leads to more soon.
