Boy is a short and sweet loop that lets you get lost in its warbly guitars, fuzzy vocals, and steady rhythms, ultimately staying with you much longer than its initial 6-minute runtime. The debut EP from UK-based LoFi outfit Rainy Day Café feels like the morning after a night out. You are still groggy, trying to grapple with your existence on the way to get a coffee, but the sun is shining and something warm, wavy, and smooth is filling your ears, while you’re still riding the euphoric high of the night before.
This project feels like rose coloured vision, it feels like reminiscing and fittingly so as the 25-year-old Songwriter, Ben Williams recently moved to the seaside town of Brighton with his partner, these songs remain as souvenirs from his former home studio. “Now that I’m no longer in that little room where these songs were made, this collection feels complete,” Williams says. Self-analysis and growth are laced throughout this EP, whether it is discussing change on the title track, or approaching ideas of his identity and future on, When I’m Older and Who will I be?, all through the medium of warm, nostalgic tape recordings. It is always an engaging combination, talking about the future with the voice of the past.
Though its subject matter may be introspective and a bit heavy, Williams constructs these songs to be aurally as comforting and chewy as bubblegum. Especially with the incredibly inviting melodies on tracks like When I’m Older making it the clear standout and a song that will be in my head, and on my playlists, for the foreseeable future.
