Back in May, Ben Basile dropped a top track instrumental ska, jazz, R&B, and soul album titled “Benergy.” It’s a nice, beautiful, and soulful album with nice, mostly relaxing vibes, outstanding keys and horns, and rhythms that have been the perfect background for listening to music while I’ve been working on my school for the last few weeks.
One of my favorite tracks is the perfectly named “Mountain Road,”” which feels like it would be a perfect addition to a stage in Mario Kart. Obviously, in my head, the stage is in the mountains. Still, it’s one of the more upbeat songs on the album that just picks me up a little bit as I imagine myself falling over the edge (what can I say? I’m terrible at Mario Kart).
“Dub 215” has a nice guitar sound that reminds me of something that would fit in the Pulp Fiction soundtrack, and I can’t explain why. It almost feels like it would fit in Neil Diamond’s “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon,” but that’s not quite it. Regardless, it has a great vibe.
And “Hot Drop” ranges from a spy movie vibe to just a great fucking jam with some stellar horns showing off over a nice fast-paced jam. This song was just written to get people moving and to show off the chops of the horn section. Seriously, you want to be moving the entire song. This song is the single reason I struggle to focus on school while listening to the album.
The entire album is solid, with a diverse range of sounds and instruments. The entire album is a vibe, and it’s definitely worth checking out for anyone who wants something instrumental to just jam, too. There is definitely something on this album to fit your mood.
