Album: Woods Of Light – Newcastle Park

Woods Of Light is the solo project of Brian G., hailing from Quebec, Canada. In his own words: “Many of these songs are autobiographical in nature and are recollections of people, places, and events that have shaped who I am as a person today.”

There is a lot of music nowadays reaching my ears that is looking back at the lazy days of the youth of people (including myself) who grew up in the 90s. There is a certain feel, a certain vibe and even chord progressions and melodies that instantly sound like a coming-of-age movie.

This is one of those albums. There is nostalgia, softness, mellow vocals and an overall indie/folk/country sound with a focus on the storytelling and the lyrics.

I instantly think of Jeff Buckley, but also The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, not because it sounds like them, and this is not a UK sound at all, but because there is something heavenly about the melodies, the arpeggios, the strumming and even how the rhythm section is produced and mixed to never take over the guitars and vocals, but just support them.

Personally, I particularly enjoyed the extra harmonies on “Blue Eyed Stranger”, and the more upbeat tracks like “Sunny Summer Avenue” and “Words We Never Say” because I think they bring more balance to the album. This album would be excellent for a road trip.

Last but not least, loving the cover artwork with the four seasons concept!
