Album: The Last Post – Wayfinder

Think of that moment when you were last satisfied with life. To be specific, think of the last time that you were truly in love with someone, and felt like your days just didn’t go on without the presence of your best partner. If either that was you or if that is where you are in your life and your relationship now, then The Last Post’s Wayfinder is for you. Sort of, but we will cross that bridge when we arrive there.

But the opening song “Reckless”? That is written for you. “Reckless” is a rock song that starts off with the intent to kick a hole in your speakers before making way for lyrics of anxiousness caused by not having your partner to temper you. “I feel selfish and sometimes reckless,” songwriter and singer Logan Betz sings, and needing someone around when things do go south does feel reckless, but that is just the withdrawals that form when you are in love.

The nostalgic and lovestruck heartland rocker “1999” and the inviting “Stay” are two songs that are more explicit in their love songs. “1999” finds singer and songwriter Betz detailing the very first time that he ever fell in love. “You were the furthest from my mind,” he recalls. Later in the first verse, it is detailed that what set everything off was realizing he “kinda liked her hair”. Soon enough, he was sending mixtapes, playing hooky from work on “Run Away”, and even being each other’s repellent from the worst on “Stay”.

Unfortunately, as sweet as they might be, the album ends on a somber note. “In the End” reveals that armor chink through not only mourning the breakdown of the relationship, but realizing it was all through jusy growing apart. The acoustic ending of such a song sets the scene for “Last Year”. Lyrics of regret, memories of goodbyes, and the feeling that what was doesn’t just go away. “Now that you’re gone, I have everything to say,” Betz sings. What is there to say? Does it matter? All that is left is the pain. This is why the song ends exploding into a grandiose arrangement complete with screamo vocals.

Make no mistake, The Last Post’s Wayfinder is one of the sweetest sounding emo albums that you will come across in a long while. One that may inspire you to put a song on a mixtape for either or crush on your current partner, but is no less realistic about the pain that can form around when love is no longer available.
