In their new single New Day, UK-based indie-rockers The Swell take influence from those who came before them and build it into an ethereal, psychedelic dream.
“New Day” is the second single from The Swell’s upcoming debut album Memories Inside the Glass Spheres. It embodies a nostalgic atmosphere, like something you’d download onto your iPod and blast through the aux cord of an old car with the windows down.
The lyrics juxtapose themes of growing distance and words left unsaid with the upbeat sound of pop-rock guitars and drums. The Swell says “New Day” “encapsulates a microcosm of the wider themes of our forthcoming album: The psychological and spiritual shift from disconnection to Infinite Connection”. This is embedded in the song through shifting time-feels and the emotional progression of the lyrics, telling a story of moving on from ending a relationship to finding freedom without it. The airy vocals evoke images of wide-open spaces and running towards your highest self as they sing “If we hold on long enough, we’ll do it in good time / Wait for me, then you will see, when you are free what you are meant to be”.
“New Day” is an anthem for finding yourself, embracing freedom, and fulfilling your potential. Inspired by indie bands of the early aughts like The Strokes and The Libertines, The Swell takes something borrowed and turns it into something new. Take a listen to the new track below.
