Bending Backwards’ “Bend You Out of Shape” doesn’t ease you in. It gets going right away, and the vocals lead the charge, sharp and clearly well put together in the mix. There’s an energy to the whole thing that feels restless in a good way, like the song can’t sit still.
The drums are the best part. They keep changing throughout, never sticking to one pattern for too long, and that movement gives the song a lot of its energy. There are some nice little percussive drum touches thrown in too, small details that add extra texture without making things messy.
It all fits the song well and it’s about childhood friendship and the careless, fun energy of a summer spent riding bikes around the neighborhood with nothing planned. The lyrics look at how people shape each other just by being close, and how that closeness can start to feel like pressure. It’s a fun song with something a little deeper underneath, and the sound matches that mix well.
Danceable, loud, and full of energy, “Bend You Out of Shape” is a strong second single ahead of the album, out September 18, and after a track this alive, it’s hard not to already be curious what this band does next.
