Single: Color Palette – Barcelona

Color Palette’s dreamy sound on their newest single sounds like the romantic escape of its lyrics.

Americans often tend to view Europe as a place where they can escape, whether to evade the ultra-capitalist horrors of living in the United States (to varying degrees of success), to see new sights, or to seek romance and passion away from the trappings of their humdrum everyday life. Little do they know that Europeans often seek the same means of escape.

Color Palette (led by songwriter/vocalist Jay Nemeyer) continues the trope on their new single “Barcelona”. The DC-based band – which has shared the stage with names like Charli XCX and won local awards – channels early-2010s West Coast indie with chiming guitars and echoing soft-spoken vocals on top of splashy drums, all to give that dreamy rose-colored vibe.

The lyrics cover the “romantic escape” subtrope of heading across the pond: Nemeyer sings of wanting to touch down in Barcelona with the subject of the song, feel the ocean air, walk down the streets, and enjoy every bit of love with the Catalonian wind in his face. It is somewhat intriguing to note that Nemeyer does not associate Barcelona with Spain in the song, but explicitly shouts out the autonomous community of Catalonia. At least Nemeyer knows what he’s talking about with regard to geopolitics.

“Barcelona” is a fun song that welcomes the warmer months in the northern hemisphere, when both flora and romance start to bloom, and the waters start to thaw and glisten underneath the sun and blue skies. Nemeyer and the rest of the Color Palette channel all of that quite well in the new track. Take a listen and follow Color Palette on their socials below.
