With a melody that, rather obviously and quite fittingly, is inspired by Say Yes by Elliott Smith, Elliot (sic) is a tribute to that very same dear departed tortured soul.
One of those artists who you can’t help but feel wasn’t fully appreciated whilst he was around, Elliott Smith was, putting it mildly, a generational talent.
On Elliot, Costa Mesa, California’s Watson Moon & Miami, Florida’s Modern Love Child come together to channel his spirit beautifully. It’s bittersweet, though (I’m sure Elliott wouldn’t have had it any other way) as they ponder a person with “lots of life left to live” alongside the beautiful, delicate lo-fi melody. There is also a particularly poignant reference to his most successful song – the Oscar-winning Miss Misery – with regards to the artist’s compassionate comprehension of Elliott’s determination to “fake it through the day”.
Unfortunately, the weight of the world was ultimately too much for Elliott to bear, and we all know how that manifested. We all struggle, but art like this helps a bit. More please.
