Another day, another fantastic new shoegaze band. What a resurgence the genre is continuing to have!
Coming from the capital city of Ottawa, Still Youth are flying the flag for The Great White North – and don’t they do so exceptionally?
The textures and tones here take you on an absolute journey. It almost feels forest-like – like we’re dappled in the light cast of the reflections of the spiraling guitars, accompanied by the faint whisper of some majestic far away creature.
On the shoegaze scale this is definitely more scenic and well-defined than some (i.e. not as fuzzy as fuzzy can be) but fans of the genre – and bands like Slowdive and DIIV – will love it. But there’s something more going on here.
There’s a gothic undertone to proceedings that brings to mind The Cure or Nick Cave. And also a glimmer of something else. Perhaps M83 in the cinematic sonic soundscapes and also maybe a smidgen of Duluth’s Low, at least when it comes to pace and bass.
This is stunning stuff. Assured, composed, and delivered with conviction.
