We have received numerous submissions over the past couple of months that have been reviving the nostalgic 90’s vibes in music, and I must say, I am thoroughly enjoying it. One recent submission comes from a Philadelphia-based indie rock band that claims their music is heavily influenced by 90s classics such as Oasis, The Smashing Pumpkins, and The Cranberries, as well as modern bands like Alvvays and Slow Pulp. They are skillfully infusing 90’s indie rock with shoegaze, which happens to be one of my favorite genres from past years. Additionally, the band has shared a quote about the song in the press, expressing their passion and vision for their music.
“Tinfoil Houses” is a shoegaze-inspired apocalyptic song with smooth, distant female vocals floating over a wall of fuzzy guitar/synth sounds, evoking the feeling of a tsunami crashing on the shore. The lyrics explore themes of climate change and classism from the perspective of a nihilistic narrator, who revels in hedonism in the verses but succumbs to cosmic terror in the chorus.
I have always been captivated by the Philadelphia music scene, which has consistently produced some of the most interesting and innovative music over the past decade. One of the rising names from this scene is definitely Special Hug, and I am eagerly anticipating their future releases. Their new single shows great promise and I have found myself falling in love with it. The combination of shoegaze with exceptional female vocals is something that I have a soft spot for. I highly recommend giving this song a listen – it’s truly something special.
