Single: Past Hours – Lonely Eyes

Lonely Eyes is a melancholy, heartbreak-laced two minute track released by promising songwriter and producer Lucy Pettitt, better known as Past Hours. Having released this single on June 27, this is an indie-rock song released in summer that can get you in your feelings and make heartbreak feel a little less lonely.

The track contains electronic and indie rock and indie pop elements ranging from the immersive vocals to the ebbs and flows of the guitars. ‘Lonely Eyes’ has an ambience and setting to it, that places you in an imaginary bar where Past Hours sings solemnly about loss and a breakup one can relate to, too much. The musician can achieve this and deliver this experience because so much of their music and artistry is influenced by indie movie aesthetics and nostalgia. This influence gives their music texture and a feeling of belonging.

The Phoenix-based artist wrote this song in the summer of 2021, inspired by a difficult heartbreak and motivated by their personal experience; they worked incredibly hard to self-produce a song that would accurately mirror their innermost thoughts and feelings. The artist contemplates the reason why his love ends in the last verse with the lyrics,

You broke my heart/and I don’t know why/ I’m still holding on. Throughout the song, Past Hours explores and experiences their pain unflinchingly. The raw emotion in the lyrics makes it feel like this despair will never end.

I believe there is power in this type of vulnerability and truth Past Hours offers listeners. There is no bridge that leads to an uplifting story about how the anguish from the love lost ended because when one suffers from the feeling, it feels never-ending.
