‘They perch like vultures’
‘Ordinary Things’ is the new single by Australian singer-songwriter Danielle Whalebone. The track is taken from her upcoming record, titled ‘Whispers of Shadows’. It begins with a disconcerting and disjointed-sounding beat, industrial and piercing in style. It’s clear from early on in the track that this is an artist that is not afraid of playing with noise – the guitar work is a little demented, a riff that wouldn’t sound out of place on a sludge track is bathed in reverb and at times buried under a cacophonous racket of what sounds like found sounds, field recordings and snippets of an angry group of construction workers. Meanwhile, she channels misery-peddlers such as Nick Cave, late Iggy Pop and Patti Smith vocally. A central mantra is repeated and manipulated in an unsettling manner until it all fizzles out like the ending of a hazy knife fight.
