“Bay Area-based non-binary artist Asha Wells is releasing their new 3-song EP ‘Tears of a Clown’ on Friday, February 2nd, 2024 via Anxiety Blanket Records.
‘Tears of a Clown’ captures the dying breaths of a waning relationship, from the initial doubt and self-reflection of ‘Impermanent I’ who creates a narrow throughline to ‘The Carousel’ whose gentle but constant thrumming is driven by the promise of something more.
The death rattle resolves on the title track ‘Tears of a Clown’, while still grasping at the idea of love. Love itself has changed and one must also change to greet it.
Musically ‘Tears of a Clown’ brings the self-assuredness of a classically-trained voice, to the unfettered freedom of a self-taught instrumentalist. The arrangements in these songs feel unlimited and yet laboriously braided. Forming a cathartic amalgam of art folk and chamber pop with a new age sonic twist.
This EP departs from their previous release ‘Water Words’ in Wells’ willingness to tap into more non-conventional sound orchestration and ever-evolving pop sensibilities. Asha draws on themes of the delicate nature of self, falling from love, and the rebuild that breaking makes.”
I suggest taking some time to listen to the full EP, even though I’m only sharing one of its singles. In my opinion, this particular track stands out as the most enjoyable from the EP. It’s a mesmerizing piece of art that blends indie pop with experimental elements, resulting in a unique and captivating sound that sets it apart from other music in our inbox. It’s a little gem that hails all the way from the Bay Area and is definitely worth checking out.
