Sheffield, United Kingdom-based emo band Pale Sailor recently released two singles titled “Undoing” and “Undone” – they were released together, creating this very interesting sort of movement. In the first track, we are in the process of undoing, and in the second, the undoing is completed, and we are undone. It’s this brilliant yet small timeline of yearning, healing, and knowing how to process distance and space. The first track, “Undoing”, is this absolutely awesome and energy-filled mathrock piece that is tied together by its slightly dreamy vocal mix, the twinkly riffs and chunky rhythm guitar giving it that characteristic emo sound that I’ll never grow away from or out of. The chorus is led by this stunning and chunky riff, and we dive into the chorus with a long note held out by the vocalist, which brings this almost triumphant yet desperate energy that completely captivates me. What’s extra cool is that “Undoing” leads straight into “Undone”.
The second track is more acoustic-centered, the lyrics bittersweet and melancholic, and with the gorgeous and enchanting vocals, we, as listeners and viewers into the world created by the track, are held completely by the vocals, almost as if we’d just put on a sweater straight from the dryer. There is such unity within these lyrics and the lyrics of “Undoing”; it creates this amazing story that almost everyone can relate to and hold within themselves. In “Undone”, there’s this beautiful, twinkly riff that is again, characteristic of the emo genre, though when it’s done like it was in this track, it captures us in a different way than when it’s done in the way we hear in “Undoing”. It’s a different kind of sonic hug, a different kind of enchantment that we’re placed under. It just holds you softly, as opposed to wrapping you in a bear hug.
These two tracks are Pale Sailor’s third release as a band following a long break. Pale Sailor knocked it out of the park with these two singles, and I have no doubt that they will continue to create and release amazing, captivating artwork that utterly enchants their listeners.
