Single: Will Orchard – Nothing Fog

“Nothing Fog” is the latest single by Will Orchard, who is a Nashville-via-New England-based indie-folk artist.

When it comes to song lyrics, I am probably the worst person to provide an opinion/analysis (how am I even allowed to write reviews? – I know!) because I am so immersed in the music that only some words and phrases reach my brain and I end up imagining my own stories about the songs I listen to. Some artists like that for their listeners and others have specific and clear messages in their songs.

In Will’s own words: “Nothing Fog expresses something very central to my struggle as a human: the feeling of pushing your own wants & needs aside, and always trying to consider every perspective until you can no longer recognize your own.”

That being the case, I wish more people thought like Will, at least to the extent that they don’t do the opposite, being all about themselves, and never considering other perspectives, living in echo chambers but I also understand on a philosophical level where he is coming from and how that can actually become a struggle.

His voice!! Wow. I didn’t expect that. It’s male high register vocal, but not the male falsetto that has been trending for years and has been done to exhaustion. This is a proper artistic, emotional, expressive voice with range as well as intention.

As for the music, I get Irish vibes. Let me explain this very basic comment of mine. Political correctness aside, folk music that comes from the US is either based on black people’s folk music, which is country, blues etc, or European white folk music which is predominantly Irish or Celtic rooted if you prefer. But this track definitely has a great combination of Brian Eno-produced U2 (in terms of openness of sound and atmosphere) sound and the clarity and detail in the sound of Nashville. Plus a vocal that would put Kate Bush to shame. Absolutely loved this one.
